Is there any actual advantage to living in dc rather than near the metro in Arlington? Arlington seems cheaper, safer, still fun, and just as close to everything by metro. Why live in dat district?

some ppl prefer to be right near the areas in DC they like to go out.

others believe it is better, cooler, more "real" to live in actual DC.

It's not like living in jersey in NYC. The people who give a fuck are generally losers who arrived in DC <2yrs ago, just moved to columbia heights and need to justify the significant extra expense.

the places you'd want to live in arlington aren't really any cheaper than a lot of good areas in DC. You basically pay the same for a slightly nicer place and better access to parking.

Main advantages are that you can generally walk to work if you want to do that, and it won't take you a lot of time and/or cost a bunch of money to get back to your place after you go out.

1. Cheaper -- barely

2. Safer -- no, this is a myth. The places you'll live in DC (if you live in a nice area like Georgetown, Dupont or West End) are just as safe

3. Still fun -- debatable

4. Just as close -- no

I live in the district now, but when I move here permanently I want to live in Arlington.

It depends what you value. Personally, I like to use my car frequently. Not necessarily to drive to work, but I like to go places. Living in DC makes that expensive and a huge pain in the ass.

Also, even if you live in the "nice areas" there are still poor blacks you have to walk around to get inside your apartment. Fuck that. Really the only tolerable place in DC is Georgetown.

in the city you can easily walk to get everything. not so much in the burbs - especially the maryland red line burbs.

there's a 24 hour harris teeter, chipotle, bars/restaurants, and a metro stop right there. it's significantly more convenient than large swaths of DC, particularly upper NW, the big downside being that you don't have fast access to all the DC bus lines.

as a retired pua, the biggest thing about roommates are the judgement that comes when bringing home anything less than an objective 7 despite your sex life running circles around any potential roommate you may have. there is still a degree of shame that isn't worth saving the extra 1000 a month. plus i like to dominate my common area and i don't wash dishes every day.
