2nd year biglaw. There are drawbacks: the billable hour culture sucks, you can't coast and need to bring your A-game to crank out decent work. But overall, this pretty much seems like every other job I've ever had - office politics, shitheads, aspies, good workers, bad workers, etc.
I mean, people seem to like me, but I'm not brilliant and fully expect to burn out and get pushed out in 3-4 years. But other than that, am I missing something? Good pay, challenging work, smart co-workers...
I'm not saying it's video game/condom/bath salt testing or anything, but this shit isn't so bad. It's certainly a living for a 20/30-something-year-old

faggots who have a combination of 1) never really worked in their lives, 2) have been told since jr high school that they are special snowflakes for turning in anything resembling a cognitive thought and are now butthurt that every little thing they do isn't rewarded with a medal.

This is my general feeling. The "problem associates" aren't those who are dumb, lazy. Instead, it's those who are a headache for firm management (asking for transfers, demanding to switch practice groups, complaining to HR about partners).
If you keep your head down, do decent work, and don't freak people the fuck out, you should be able to make it a few years.

it carries over from law school when shit like this was semi-accepted since they were paying tuition.
i'd be surprised if many of the problem associates ever worked a regular middle-class teenager job before. probably nothing more than prestigious unpaid internships and volunteering.

how bad to ask for a transfer to a different department BEFORE you start at the firm?

You know it's not a burn if the person admits it.
