The idea that people sell themselves for a best-case scenario of "not that bad" is pretty frightening.

in any given office there will be a few partners who are so fucking crazy, so status obsessed and driven to be recognized for what they do (and able to get that recognition) that they do, in fact, enjoy biglaw

Yeah. Pretty much it's about just wanting to succeed at *something*, and convincing yourself that you're a supersmart badass because you're doing well in biglaw.

Plenty of bankers like this, but they still hate it just like everybody else. They make millions and are huge in their field, and they sit at their desks or stomp through airports saying, "Fuck, how much longer do I have to do this."

And the answer is usually: until they die. Because they live in MFH and have another home or two and private school and their bank stock tanked.

It has its moments. The partners really make it worst than what it should be. Also, the demand to make everything perfect (and the associated repercussions for making an error) makes it unbearable.

My old firm was a revolving door. I still know a 4th year that has been unable to lateral. He has been looking for the past 2 years. He constantly talks about just returning to his previous career, but he got golden handcuffs pwned.

I enjoy it as much as any other job I've ever done, which is to say; not at all. That said, the $$$ is good.
