Most MIT/Caltech grads I've known have been much more intelligent than HYPS grads. But most 18-yr-olds would rather go to the safe and more prestigious school than Caltech. That being said, Caltech definitely attracts some ppl who turn down HYPS to attend Caltech. And you're pretty accurate - every caltech grad I know is either a professor, in research, or works for the government doing very secret work. For the latter who work in government, I have NO general idea about what they work since they cant say anything, but I'm going to take a guess that it involves defense work.
