Obviously academia can be retarded, student loan bubble is absurd, fewer people should be going to TTTs, etc. Does not change the clear fact that there is nowhere else on Earth even in remotely the same ballpark as us when it comes to research institutions and DAT SCHOLARSHIP. There are plenty of countries with one or two or maybe even a handful of amazing ones (UK, France, etc.), but the combination of quantity and quality here is untouched. There's a reason the richest, most preftigious international kids from every single country want to get their degrees HERE. Period.
HYPS, Caltech, MIT...it's just really not close. |

There are middle class valedictorians going to these schools for cheaper than their state flagships and poor valedictorians going to them literally for free.

Class mobility. Yes there is a lot of income inequality but if you're a really smart kid who grows up on a farm in the midwest you still have a shot at founding a startup or getting an upper-middle class job, etc. That isn't even possible in some countries where nepotism and corruption rule.
