From what I can remember growing up and in my own years in academia, the faculty looked down on the support staff and resented the administration. The administration resented the faculty. Everyone resented the president and provost. And everyone resented the students. Everyone especially despised the graduate students as they had to be funded. Professional students were thoroughly ignored and quickly forgotten. And had a couple meetings every day complaining.

Academia can be just as bitchy, judgmental and petty as a girls' boarding school. And like a girls' boarding school it's also out of touch with reality.

The private sector can be dysfunctional but it's driven by the profit motive. No one is going to carry you so you have to work to survive. That's a major incentive you don't find in academia, once you're tenured.

For people who went to top tier graduate programs and could very well have sought academia, I think this is second to the contempt of people pushing ideas that have no value in practice. This applies not just to the humanities and soft social sciences, but also to say economics. Many PhD's at the IMF, Fed, World Bank thing macro researchers in top tier departments are engaged in a clueless, intellectual circle jerk (think like Bernanke, Summers, Blanchard vs. Phelps, Lucas, Krugman since you are an econ guy).

This holds for a lot of other fields too. Engineering PhD's in hot fields like nano hate on profs for doing work that they view as digressive compared to where technology is commercially going. You could argue non-viable research actually undermines emerging applied sciences areas by painting them as too theoretical. Same holds for math, physics, biochem, etc.

There are basically two types of academics: real scholars and scientists who can ONLY do their work if they are attached to a university (which is understandable and not annoying), and then the parasite types who need to hitch their cart to a larger institution to feel validated. I would argue that most academics are in the second category.
