most of my friends from my TTT UG got random corporate jobs at banks or marketing firms or whatever, and are making 60-70k 5 years out. one of them took today off to get a couch delivered and is spending the rest of the day playing mario kart 8 with his girl, who just called in sick to stay in with him. seems pretty credited.

so you can't take off a few hours to get furniture delivered if you work at a law firm? do they expect you to just sit on the floor or something?

cr. Can just slip out for a few hours without saying anything to anyone. Need to diversify your workflow so that people can always assume that you're doing something for someone else. Make your hours and hopefully no one cares.

I can certainly understand the allure of it. If you can have good food, get laid, and have a comfy place to sleep and watch tv you're set for the most part. The material things you could buy with biglaw money probably aren't worth the stress of billable hours and 24/7 availability.

What would you have done if you ended up bailing into midlaw like earl? Would you be OK with the hours and lifestyle of still seriously working in the legal profession for midlaw comp and likely upward mobility?

if i ended up in midlaw, i would've considered it to be a temporary thing as well. i just didn't want to be at a law firm and i hated litigation. i also didn't want a job that required billing hours, period. i don't care if they have a 1500 hrs billing requirement. it's the constantly being on call and being your client's bitch. i also don't want the pressures that come w/ being partner (internal politics, marketing, etc). i would work midlaw until i could find another job (legal or non-legal).

it wasn't actually a librarian position...more legal research that said "jd preferred." but even if they wanted an actual librarian, i would've stilled applied. i learned a long time ago that you should just apply to every random ass position you find even if you don't meet the qualifications b/c you never know.

In law the experience barrier is far more true than most professions, but Nutella still has the right idea. Without personal advantages, volume is the only I way I can imagine anyone has a shot at decent jobs.

This is cr. My personal strategy is to simply apply to any job I believe I could perform reasonably well - no matter their stated preferred experience level or qualifications. This has resulted in more interviews or job offers than Millenials would expect, since H.R. reps will consider candidates in any number of ways.

TBF, you are an attractive minority woman who knows how to shake down the corporate employment process like a pro, so the normal rules don't apply to you. But I generally agree.

Knowing how to shake down the corporate employment process is a skill which can improve anyone's prospects, to be fair. Being an attractive minority helps, sure, but it only takes you so far. The rest is understanding how H.R. at these companies thinks, how to apply & negotiate offers accordingly, which sorts of jobs to prefer, etc.

My brief stint at Franklin Templeton was like this. I was making 95k base + 15k bonus to write 1-2 blogs and conduct one TV interview per week. I literally worked no more than 10 hours per week. Maybe I'm a striver, but that was too fucking boring for me to withstand...I left a few months later for a job that paid only a bit more, in which I worked 60 hrs/wk, but had real responsibility & job satisfaction. Sitting around twiddling my thumbs all day isn't for me. I don't delude myself into believing my work has real value, but having something to occupy your mind/time is intrinsically rewarding.

Of course, there are diminishing returns on the other end, as well. At more than 60 hours per week, I don't care what you pay me - I'd rather do nothing for 60-90k than work myself to death for $250-300k.

different stroke for different folks. i know people who need to be stimulated intellectually at their jobs. i'm not one of them. i find satisfaction in having a life outside work and being able to leave and truly not be on call.

i average doing anywhere from 10-20 hours of actual work per week. i find plenty of things to amuse myself with during the day (gym, checking my stock portfolio, looking at redfin, gchatting, xoxo, etc.)

In general,I agree, although a job that is challenging or intellectually rewarding can partly justify longer hours and/or lower pay . My current job is probably the sweet spot - $200kish for 30 hrs/wk of real work (although I'm in the office or on call for about 50). Any more than that, though, and I'd rather take the OP's proposition.

I'm not in Biglaw anymore but I still work 8-7 most days for 5 x what your friends make.

I, err, um, ah, really, really, really like the paycheck. That's why I don't mind the hours and I do enjoy what I do. It's a lot of strategic planning, meetings, pitch sessions, reviewing docs and recs from the legal division, and some internal corporate management bullshit. Definitely not as stressful as Biglaw could be but the stakes are a bit higher in a way.

It helps that my wife is pretty accommodating, she knows she won't see much of me till the weekends and that plans can cancel at any minute because I have to fly somewhere.

When I was in biglaw, I would sometimes stop at some annoying traffic bottleneck and honestly fantasize about being one of the construction workers (no homo). Being outside rather than in a sterile office environment sitting in a chair for 12 hours a day while developing weird posture issues and becoming more and more nebbish, absorbing Vitamin C from the sun like humans are supposed to do, working with my hands, building something ... yeah not a good sign when you look up to construction workers.

The difference is entirely the being on call 24/7 element. I usually leave my biglaw office around 7 pm, but have the obligation to drop everything and do work from home 24/7. So even when I get home, my mind is stuck in work. So a 9-5 with a blackberry and that culture wouldn't be worth it. Biglaw 9-7 or 9-8 would be fine if you could stop thinking about work when you got home or on a Sunday.

I quit BIGLAW after 1.5 years, did another half year at a smaller more niche firm, then quit when an opportunity in a related but not-attorney gig 9-5, 65K opened up. I took a pay cut but this allows me to grow into the new industry. When I'm 45 I will thank myself. If I had stayed in law I would have been stuck forever.

Leaving after 1.5: not a problem. I have a dual degree and almost no debt so it wasn't as big of a deal. The firm was awful but sometimes I think it was just me being a white collar pussy. Some people quit after 1 year, some left around 1.5, more left around 2 years, but the majority were still there for year 3. They wished me well and the only negative shit I got was passive aggressive comments from my law school peers at alumni events. "Wait, so you LEFT?! Wow...." I've come to realize the envy.

Small firm: This work is what helped me jump to the new line of work. They were not happy when I left. Not happy at all. I don't feel bad about it because they knew I was thinking about leaving law in general and I did great work for them.

Catch-22 re: 2 years. On one hand, 2 years lets you claim to have been a real attorney and maybe a coherent narrative about wanting to leave. Plus it looks less like you were jumping around. On the other hand, if you stay too long in law it becomes really hard to leave law. Even 2 years might make it difficult because the lack of practical non-legal experience. And the golden handcuffs.

New job is in a field where having a JD is not a scarlet letter but at the same time it's not required. It helped me get the job and allows me to do the job well (although just being type A is probably sufficient). The real kicker will be when I start interviewing for senior management level positions. The JD is, I am told, a selling point for these people. Law degrees are prestigious to non-lawyers.

Cool man. Thanks for this. What line of work is your new job in?

I'll probably just stick around for 2 as I'm already haflway there. Gotta GUARD AGAINST that "just one more year" syndrome though. I see 6th and 7th years that literally want to die but they've gone all in and there's no turning back.

Golden handcuffs and no exit options man. It's a hard line to balance. My advice: start the networking coffees now. I am a rare story though my friend, most people don't have degrees outside of law and the right connections, so be careful.

I wish I could talk more about my job. I think it's 180. But XO is XO. It's just a JD advantage type of job.

if you're in corporate, you should stick it out. if you're in lit and want to exit lit, it's pretty tough after 4-5 years. your entire skill set is not transferrable into any other field, even other legal fields.

short stint in biglaw before going in-house...all m&a/pe type work for a certain industry. Not a fan of current employer but I feel that skipping out on 2 jobs in 3 years is going to look bad. Thoughts? Stick it out at current in-house for 3-4 years before looking for something else?

yes, i'd say at least 2-3 years before looking. otherwise you look too flaky.

i'm in a similar situation...does staying for 3-4 years in-house preclude you from going back to biglaw? stayed under 2 years in biglaw due to practice area issues, but have thought about going back after putting in some in-house time, where i'm getting hands on experience and working directly with biglaw partners.

why on earth would you want to go back to biglaw? sorry, once you're in-house, you're stuck in-house (for better or worse). your experience is not relevant to biglaw practice, even if you're working directly with biglaw partners.

Nutella, your point makes sense for those trying to stay in law. My advice was exclusively for people trying to leave the industry. There's a fine balance between staying too long and getting locked into biglaw (either through golden handcuffs or lack of non-legal experience) and leaving too fast and looking "flaky" as you describe it.

For a litigator, they're pretty much stuck in litigation after a few years. Corporate, as you note, has a better chance getting in-house.

If you know you want out of law (in my case having a dual degree and specific industry in mind), it may make sense to jump before 2 years. I was able to leverage the prestige of my firm, some of the experience, and JD into this new industry. Had I waited too long, they would consider me just another attorney looking to leave law.

That said, I think it is not common, but not rare. Plenty of attorneys in non-legal gigs. I may agree not to count on it, but that is why I recommend some coffee and networking ASAP to test the water. You lose an hour and $5.

I jumped before year to 9-5 150k inhouse (I know I got lucky). Can't hurt to apply for inhouse jobs you're qualified for (some, not many but some, will hire people with 0-3 yrs experience).

This is odd. Who works 8-6? It's not normal software, and salary is too high for software. Software base salary maxes around $200k. And why stock options? I suspect this is a legal/business position at a start-up so your options are (very likely) worthless.
