So men should prefer women around their early-mid 20s, but they don't; most are more sexually attracted to teens. So why is this? Is it just the taboo, since it's illegal and frowned upon in Western society? What we care about is infant & maternal mortality. The number that survives is what matters, since it's the survivors that effectively transmit the genes & increase population. Mating with teens means increasing the risk of maternal AND infant mortality - both of which are massive genetic wastes and dangerous for the tribe when it occurs repeatedly.

You can achieve significantly higher rates of survival AND lower rate of infertility by just waiting a couple of years. This strategy will probably result in higher survival rates and greater population growth.

Now, it may be that since everyone was dead by 22, anyhow, mating with teens was necessary to ensure enough couplings.

The best strategy is to find lots of highly fertile women: Go impregnate as many peak fertility 21-26 year-olds as possible to maximize reproductive success. And that's the point of your question, I think: Why aren't XO men lusting after 24 yos instead of 16 yos, when the former are clearly the better reproductive bet? These are the real genetic prizes.

Each of these risks, individually, puts downward pressure on population, and collectively, could seriously stymie human communities. And with every mating prior to (or after)peak fertility, the community faces these increased risks. It's more dangerous to the community for a young woman to die than it is for a woman past peak fertility, so the arguments in favor of mating with teens just don't add up.

The only explanation that makes sense is that it was done due to short lifespans and limited availability of peak fertility mates.

You say men want to limit other men's access to women they have mated with - that may be true but it doesn't mean that they are limiting themselves to mating with these same women. Men could keep a woman/women for themselves, and still fuck other women. THIS is the dominant strategy.

You're saying men prefer teens because they can begin to mate with them young and have many children with them over a lifetime; this contradicts evolutionary bio. Men are programmed NOT to continue to mate with one woman repeatedly (mating with a diverse assortment of women increases one's odds of having fit children). This is why you get men saying they're bored with fucking a woman they're in an LTR with.

Relations were more stable than the old evolutionary biologists understood. Women often did stay in harems for long periods of time and men produced offspring from one or a small number of women over the course of a lifetime. To say that these conditions were in opposition to our genetic instincts is to greatly underestimate the speed of natural selection.

Given a short life expectancy and the high costs of cheating, the dominant strategy is to mate with someone who is very young. We can see this in third world countries and even in the west as late as the last century. In the future I imagine the current environmental pressures will select for those who prefer the older women that the poster above refers to.

I think part of what's going on, especially in this country, is that women start letting themselves go in college and beyond (both with food and alcohol), such that on average the younger girls look better.

I think that when girls put consistent effort into their appearance, they look best in their 20s.
