not a solo but work in a small firm where i have to actively promote business.

just do website and pay to come up a top search in google for your area of law and location. aside from that join networking groups, local politics (i refuse) and develop referring relationships with other lawyers near you.

I do the local newspaper that hits 6 towns, about 8-10k per town. But you have to be able to handle real estate, family, wills, dui, and injury. Results in a pretty good living. Full page ad is only 5k for the year.

Suburbs of a major city. Just have to hold firm on your prices, 2k for DUI, 300/hr for divorce w/ 10k retainer. Tell them they can pay less, but you offer quality service, and they are welcome to find someone who is cheaper. The key is getting them to think that cheaper means lesser quality without actually saying it. More than half my customers sign up after shopping around for a bit.

AdWords and Avvo are the only "advertising" I do, but I market through solo attorney bar groups as well.

Thanks. What kind of conversion rate do you see on Adwords (ie: what percent of clicks become clients)?

I don't really follow that. I had grand plans to track all that shit, but I spend so little on AdWords that it's not really worth my time to set all that up. It is not a significant expense (or client source, as far as I know).

Actually, my two biggest clients found me online. One definitely through Avvo, and the other probably so as well (it was a referral from their general outside counsel, whom I had never met, so I think he must have just found me online, but I think it was more likely Avvo than AdWords).

As far as numbers, go, it's probably close to an even split between online and referrals from people I've interacted with.

Kind of. I built it out, but it doesn't take that much time. I also pay them to be a sponsored listing on searches. When I first started out as a solo I spent a fair amount of time answering questions, which turned into some business, but I haven't been doing that much recently.

Flat monthly fee. Hard to track exactly (or, at least, I don't track it much). The single client that gives me probably 50% of my revenue came from answering a question on Avvo re a piddly little matter (literally charged $250 to handle), and I'm pretty sure my second biggest client came from my sponsored Avvo listing.
