And what do I think of the Matrix movie? The first Matrix epitomized the American mass cultural zeitgeist as it existed just prior to the socially, culturally transformative events of September 2001 and the subsequent period of bellicosity that was unleashed. Thus, the movie perfectly captured America at a particular peak of potency and potential, freed for over a decade from the encumbrances of the Cold War, not yet beset by the terror of a new external, existential enemy. It is both a perfect portrait in time and a chilling exposition on the "what could have been" of American mass cultural artistry in the ensuing years had the course of events turned out differently. Insofar as things occurred as they did occur, the next two movies, in their simultaneous questioning mediocrity and inappropriately explosive exuberance well capture the tortuous path that we've wound around for the last decade. All this, members of the jury, will be demonstrated by the evidence that you're about to see over the coming days. It's up to you -- each and every one of you -- to sort through these facts and understand the cinematic, artistic, cultural narrative of heritage and consequences and temporality that they bring with them -- a task I know all of you are eminently capable of. And so, the magic begins.
