They huddled together against the raw autumn air, the professor and the retired professor emeritus, a tweed Gibraltar buffeted by the wakes of the young scholars passing through the twilight of the quadrangle, headlong hurriers in search of their evening harbors. In this sacrosanct circle, the two men carried on their hushed exchange, the retired professor emeritus rapt in the dialogue, his argument pouring forth with fiery cadence, the younger man equally committed to the conversation's cause but finding himself unintentionally distracted by the miniature raccoon emerging from the velvet breast pocket of his elder interlocutor's well-worn, well-traveled Donegal jacket, its eyes sparkling with unmistakable intelligence.
