Nine bags with this one; he'd dump them each separately--a long night. He sighed to himself. In a farm-boy-makes-good sort of way, the kid seemed alright. Probably had a family back in New York. He knew, at least, he'd been married. He felt the ring in his left hand, could feel the grooves of the inscription "T&M." Sorry "T." It was his souvenir now.
And he was sorry. Sorry to everyone. To the kid, to the family, to his own ideals that he'd sacrificed to this fucked up life. But a client had been let down. Everything else--the when, the where, the how--was just a matter of formality; "chef's choice" as the chairman said. The kid's fate had been sealed the minute he'd blown the deadline.
He wiped his still-gloved right hand against the leather of the passenger seat and smashed down on the accelerator, the dust of the road curling up in his wake. |
