Created this thread b/c the NYC Fleet Week + all the recent lib talk @ college campuses. I knew some bros who did prestigious UG --> mil service DESPITE having options like banking/consulting/law school/etc. on the table.

Nothing but respect for those bros.

opposite

you almost always get a bump relative to your IQ

the interests you're advancing doing it, aren't worth risking your life over, or even spending 4 years of your life advancing

Everythig about this is wrong. If you have t20 UG you're taking a big prestige hit relative to IQ to join military- officer or enlisted.

And the interests of national security, american influence, secure economic interests, are worth your life and thousands more

Lol at establishing a stable democraric society being a military rather than a political goal. The military accomplished its mission in Iraq, but the political /diplomatic missions was a fantasy from the start.

It's credited, but not "prestigious."

That said, after spending 4 years in, it becomes a time sink.

I think the military should offer a 1 year service option with a guaranteed job so more people will serve and then people would be less willing to let the government be the world's police knowing how that gets people needlessly maimed/killed.

There's a program that's basically this. Or was. "National Call to Service" enlistees spent about a year on active duty following training (which generally made for about a year and a half to two years of full-time service, total), with a follow-on period in the reserve. I'm not sure whether they still do it, but it was a good idea --- NCS enlistees seemed to be pretty high-quality.

What is both credited and prestigious is not having to depend on someone else to provide you a living. Military service is a fine resume line, but it doesn't necessarily bring you any closer to having real independence.

Credited not really prestigious in the sense of being very competitive/lucrative but in an aristocratic sense of noblesse oblige it is. Kind of like serving in local elected office. Usually filled w TTT's but paired w right background good accent to a resume. ROTC programs at elite colleges are soooo CR and should be pushed even harder by every branch. Anyone interested in this should read Leonard woods speeches. Also it's extremely CR that bschools and lawschools love admitting vets.

I know a bro who enlisted in the 75 Rangers after 3 years of big-finance. Did 4 years with multiple combat deployments and then went strait to top 3 MBA. Killing it now in Private Equity.

Never specifically asked if he killed anyone, but he has all these cool photos of him in badass spec ops gear on Helicopters at nighttime. I'm guessing they were raiding Taliban and shit and doing snatch and grabs.

That is credited and prestigious as fuck.

In our society, is there anything more prestigious than HUG -> Combat Veteran -> Finance? (Possibly with an MBA in there somewhere, but the prestige of the rest just obscures the MBA's existence.)
