It wasn't the cold or the isolation or the darkness. It was the noise. The constant low pulse of sound, scratching, clawing, permeating through the steel plating greatworks, filling the corridors at all hours, the maddening chorus progress of each day. Ensconced within this wonder marvel of the modern world, the din was consuming him. He could feel the slow steady decay of the structure of his intellect, assaulted without end by the aural siege of the cold wind, howling mother to a desolate world.

He knew his situation was perilous. The cathedral erected within his mind -- the collected work of more than three decades of seeking, striving, never yielding, the fundament of the western canon filtered through endless hours of lamplit endeavor -- was collapsing. Streams of Handel HWV 348 floated across the air from the AllSphere. From his chair in the wetlab he started up through the glass cupola in the ceiling out into the stars, milky incandescent things set within the twilight blue of the freezing air, tears streaming from his eyes. He would not yield.

There was no one to speak to on the outside--the orbital blackout would last three more months. Whatever he did would be done on his own. No matter. His inspiration was immediate: he would build back the bulwark of his brain through a vicious extended dialectic of himself to himself through himself. The discourse would begin at the flashpoint of existence and extend outward through philosophical space, slowly constructing this new, never-before-achieved metaphysical frame of the western world, layer upon layer of intellectual fabric woven into the fragile structure of his soul, modern day Quintilian him. He traversed the space of the lab and sat on the stairs leading up to the greenhouse. Clearing his throat he began: "Let us assume as a first proposition that I myself have this first property: that I am capable . . . ." And so he proceeded late into the night and over the AllSphere Handel played on.
