As a kid, I thought dudes wearing suits to work were very important.

As an adult, I realized how right I'd been. But not just any suits, and not just any "dudes." These were the men of the morning, their bespoke perfection slicing through the heavy summer air--superspun wools and soft english patterns the calling card of their industry, streaming out from station stops and beelining black cars, the signal fire of our civilization presenting for another day. I'd watch them emerge each morning, echelon pattern elite, moving in cadence to a chorus of transitline chatter, another conference scheduled, another quick call made, no time for hesitation in their world, high-stakes technovore champions of the concrete canyons them. And as I gazed up, watched their progress, heard the scrape of their soft shoes against the rough architecture of the pavement, I wondered, could I join their ranks? Could I be one of them?
