My firm generally tries to hire people with 10+ years of experience. There's an occasional nice surprise but the majority don't add much to my practice. And sometimes detract from it.

Anyone have any success with hiring a new college grad, teaching them everything over the course of three weeks and letting them have at it?

"Legal assistant" doesn't have much of a standardized meaning.

What are the tasks?

Lit practice . Proofreading pleadings, doing e filings, assembling binders, not waiting until Monday to tell me the fucking opposition arrived last Friday via FedEx.

people with 10+ years of experience have been consistently bad. much better to just teach a smart new grad the ropes even though they'll probably leave for better things after a few years, and repeat as necessary.
