IDK bro. My first year office mate and I got shit on by the same senior associate and when we worked late we'd just laugh about what a tool the guy was for an hour, then talk about the plans we had to bang chicks over the weekend, and billed the whole time for it. Was always 180.

If you polled associates, the percentage choosing cubicles over offices would be less than 5%. I love the delusional boomers claiming "millennials want to be around eachother" as the foundation for doing these sorts of things.

They will usually dial in to calls from the more senior person's office, but yes there will be calls, there will be dumb hallway conversations, there will be typing, there will be food smells....the privacy of an office and ability to shut the door when making personal phone calls/having a mental breakdown are what make big law barely sustainable. It's is bad enough as is, I can only imagine how much worse it would be in a cubicle.

JFC. One of the few ways that law firm conservatism benefited associates is det. What's the over/under on the number of almost-always-empty partner-sized offices, nominally used by people who "split their time between offices" or never come in because they're always doing "business development?"

As everyone knows the only reason they're doing this is to save on rent.

Personally, I've been saying for years that these biglaw firms (save for maybe the very top ones) should move like 60% of their space outside Manhattan. Now THAT would be a big cost savings.

If law firms were innovative, then they could do a lot of things to cut costs. But they're not.

On paper, the legal profession would be a very easy one to make mostly remote. In my experience, most law firms consist of people who come to one building, each has their own office, then doesn't see each other in person except in the hallways. There is really no good reason that a law firm couldn't have a much smaller office and adopt the policy that people only come in when needed, with allowing proven lawyers to work completely remote from anywhere in the world. The reason this isn't really happening is entirely cultural.

I agree with you, though collaborating in person and being in an office with a colleague while on a call together can be helpful (talking over points while on mute, etc).

But with the amount of partners who live outside the city, it certainly makes sense to move a significant portion of the physical plant outside the city, sorta like Boies Schiller. The cost savings must be astronomical. At the very least, moving all the back office stuff 30 mins outside the city is worthwhile.

The burnout rate will skyrocket or people will start telecommuting every other day. $160k/year for recent law grads with huge debt working in cubicles will absolutely not feel like they're making great money justifying huge sacrifices.

The other thing is that if law students have options between a cubicle law firm and one that gives them real office I don't think there's going to be any question which one they choose.

lol no shit literally last week i heard the same story from a DIFFERENT boomer than ever before about the millennial who demanded his work stop at 4pm so he could go to yoga

I asked the two millennials standing next to me at this party "uh, have you ever thought about doing that?" and they were both like "fuck no"

I did once try to work out an arrangement where I would leave work at 5 one day a week, go to a professional networking event I was helping to organize, and then log back on around 830 and do a couple more hours work. Keep in mind I was grunt level making about 55k.

This was brought up negatively at my next performance review.

The "best" law grads spend a year or two (if any time at all) in large firm settings. The top three or so students at t14s clerk and teach or clerk and do other government work or go into business. Ljl at the idea of the Harvard Law valedictorian spending a day in his or her life in a small office or cube.

I think this is MFCR. Next, lower the starting salaries to a more realistic $80,000 and then the masses of lemmings will stop going to law school.

Uh-oh, a shortage of lawyers! How will society survive??

In house at the big banks its all cubicles or open floor BS. I've worked at two mega banks now and nobody short of an ED has their own office. Law firms shouldnt be more luxurious than their biggest clients.

Yes but in legal at a bank you are also working 9-5, no weekends, have chill coworkers and bosses, and having a cubicle is just part of being back office/support staff.

it was my first interview in mfh. the big city.

i remember interviewing at ph and walking down the hall with some partner.

i saw a first year office - glass partition in the middle - and two sad looking associates sitting on either side. i asked the partner "what's that about?" he chuckled and said "oh they like it."

ATTENTION LAW STUDENTS

This is absolutely something that you should weigh when choosing a firm. Everything else is flame but layoffs and having your own office are the one thing that differs between firms that can really affect your career and mental health. I know this place isn't prefstegious anymore so most of you have no options, but the ones that do, DON'T CHOOSE LATHAM OR PAUL HASTINGS. Fuck firms that do this shit.

Latham always forced first-years to share offices (even after massacring half of them) so I guess it's not a shock.

>> “I really do believe first- and second-years will benefit from true collaboration—they feed off each other,” said Barry Brooks, the chair of the firm’s New York office. “I don’t feel bad about it.”

The open zones will be cordoned off from the rest of the office by a wall of glass, and dividers will separate each desk. “There’s plenty of privacy,” Mr. Brooks said. <<

Cot damn, this is just so disingenuous and scummy.

The world is moving in this direction unfortunately. In London, everyone shares offices (even partners), with junior people sitting with senior people. Some places over here are moving to open plan offices. US firms in London are starting to adopt that, and it's only a matter of time before they ship it back over to the US.

I moved from having my own office to sharing one when I switched firms and it is definitely pretty annoying in some ways, but you get used to it, and it is kind of nice how much more social everything is, vs. sitting in your own office and never seeing another human ever.

I don't think open plan offices is right for law firms.

That said, what is most bothersome is the suggestion that this is about collaboration or about doing something that millennials prefer -- no it's not, it's about fucking money. Just fucking say that.

Agreed on both counts. If you want to save money, just own it, and open plan is wayyyy shittier than sharing an office with a door you can close to shut out hallway chatter.

Also, in the UK firms, part of the rationale is training - trainees are put with partners and not even the managing partner would rate a solo office. Clumping a bunch of first years together at the end of the hallway doesn't help the first years any.

You just do it - everyone uses fb, gmail, whatever now and then. As long as you're not fucking around when you shouldn't be, who gives a fuck that you're watching tv on your phone or something while you're working. Might be different at a douchier firm/office though. We've got these screen protector things as well, which make it impossible to see what's on a screen unless you are at the right angle, but they give me a headache so I don't use them.

In terms of other stuff, I miss being able to take a quick nap in the office, or have personal phone calls, but it's not that big a deal - most of the time I was only making personal calls after hours anyway and even now it's rare that both I and my officemate are working late at the same time. It's a little awk for stuff like calling the doctor, but I realize that no one gives a fuck about my medical issues just like I don't give a fuck about anyone else's. Obviously I couldn't take calls from recruiters/apply to new jobs, but I just moved here so that hasn't been a problem yet.

Rereading my post, I think you are right.

But honestly it's hard to get too worked up over sharing an office with one other person, when everyone else in the corporate world (including the MDs at Goldman, etc.) are sitting in open plan offices. Plenty of things are annoying about biglaw but honestly sharing an office is NBD.
