I was traveling all the time for my job, with 80% of the travel being to Houston/Dallas/Austin. I figured my travel schedule would be way easier and that I would have a lot better dating options here (which has been true). After I had the transfer complete and lease signed, I got a new job at my same company - based out of Denver. Where, all things considered, I would probably rather live. I don't know anyone in Austin, which has been tough. I have friends in Denver and there is more outdoor stuff to do. To be fair, my unhappiness is more about my personal situation than Austin.

tbf, I'd prob choose Denver. But I've found that Austin attracts a pretty fun crowd and with so many transplants, a ton of people are in your situation and looking to make friends

I agree. Part of my problem is I live by The Domain, so I am not meeting a lot of people in my situation. I should have moved to South Austin.

E-mail me if you want to grab a beer sometime. My social life revolves around taking out emotionally broken 30 year olds I meet off Tinder and need a break from that.

i went there for undergrad and graduated early to GTFO. literally hated everyone in the fucking city such that i wouldnt piss on a one of them if they were on fire.

for random reasons, at a later stage in life, spent a few months boinking a girl who was an austinphile. they are like a fucking cult, convinced their city ranks up there with SF, Seattle, Portland or Denver in terms of outdoors stuff, that their 'music' is some big thing.

There is nothing scenic so to speak of around Austin, and if your 15 friends from your dallas high school come to see your 'band' at an 100+ degree outdoor festival you aren't exactly kiling it like STYX right?

you don't have the mega national parks that denver or the bay area do within a couple hours, but there also aren't many major metros where you can go float on the river after a 10 minute drive from your house.

downtown is a TTT area to live really. TCR is somewhere that's close enough to quickly get downtown (even by bike, austin is flat as fuck) and you can still have a yard for BBQ. living downtown kind of misses the point of a place like austin, which is that you can be downtown in 10 minutes to do stuff while enjoying a real residence

Austin is the same as all of the other major Texas cities. A little hotter than Houston, a little more hilly than Dallas. If you're whole world is Texas, and you grew up in a cookie cutter suburb in either of those two metros and went to Austin for college, you're likely to think that Austin is this great fun city. In reality, it's just more of the same. People who actually live in Austin realize this pretty quick.

There is outdoorsy stuff to do wherever you go in this country within an hour or so of the city center. Austin doesn't have particularly good outdoorsy stuff--nothing that compares to say, the Hudson River Valley in October.

on the second point, I don't think people are impressed by Austin's nature on the whole (tho the lakes and natural springs are great destinations in the summer), but rather how accessible a good bit of water (town lake/greenbelt), trails (Hike and Bike/Greenbelt) and parks (Zilker) are from the center of downtown, instead of an hour from the city
