It's actually fun because online speed testing tools give you instant gratification when you deploy and you see your score go up. I already had Gulp minifying stuff, but tonight I linted my SCSS to remove redundant shit and unused rules and alphabetize it to make it more gzippable.

Yes, absolutely worth learning scss. Makes your CSS modular and reuseable by giving you a performant @import keyword, variables, functions, mixins... It's just great.

My front end stack is Gulp, Sass, Neat (a lightweight, semantic grid system), and vanilla ES6 Javascript. I'll use React if I'm doing something complicated enough to need a framework.

You're right about mastering it being pretty hard. The basic workflow is simple, but learning all the different ways to unfuck a repo takes time, especially if you're working with other people. I think the reason it is hard to learn is because it is all a little abstract until you actually have a problem you need to solve with it. A beginner working alone can get along with a simple branch, stage, commit, merge, push workflow for a long time without needing to learn anything else.

don't you pretty much have to go through something like this to learn it?

I took intro to programming and algorithms and data structures at a community college, and the rest has been various tutorials and videos online. I did I lot of studying on Udacity and Lynda.com, and Front End Masters has been great for actually understanding how the javascript compiler/interpreter works.

It can be frustrating, so for a lot of stuff I'll just google and stack overflow blindly until something works. Over time the gaps in knowledge fill in over time. It probably helps that I've read webdev forums for the past two years, so I have a better theoretical than practical understanding of a lot of current best practices. It helps when you already know where to look?

Are you also a codePIG?

I started learning a bit this year. It's fun when you know what you're doing and are accomplishing things. But most of the time you're reading excruciatingly dry documentation to solve some tiny task.

Which course is best?

What are you trying to do? Web development? Front end stuff? Back end stuff?

Some people really like the treehouse tutorials, and their stuff on SASS was pretty useful for me. I like the Udacity courses on Python and Javascript.

this is sad bro, you are making so many poor life decisions.

1. going into a commoditized field at an advanced age

2. marrying a chink woman

3. bringing said chink woman to America

4. pulling an all nighter instead of keeping regular hours

your chink gf is gonna cheat on you with some rent seeking kike once she realizes how much honest workers get fucked in America. these hoes ain't loyal, remember this.

Building large applications in the browser is still relatively new, so the frameworks and builds tools that make it possible to do are still immature compared to server side. The first generation of frameworks only dealt with the pain of supporting multiple browsers, but didn't make it much easier to build applications. Second generation came along and make applications less painful to write, but each had their own flaws. I really like React and it's ecosystem, and I feel like it is a mature solution that will last a while. Hopefully Angular 2 is good too so the churn can slow down a bit.

Tons of resources online to learn from, then a couple years of practice while working in another field. Started with Udacity + Front End Masters + Treehouse and then just started building small web sites. I built up a decent enough portfolio of small projects, used that to get a job and learned a ton at work.

I'm making around 110, three years in.
