not a particular skimo, but can someone explain to me how spending tons of money on a far-away ski trip is a good use of resources (assuming you dont have throw-away money)?

i can see why you'd golf overseas, but skiing, i just dont get why people do it beyond one-upping their friends that they're in chamonix for winter vacation.

at least for niseko it's because it dumps powder. friends who have done argentina say it's awesome because totally wild. another reason may be just variety. can only do BC/CA/CO/WA so long before time to try something new

I think South America is credited because you can go in the summer and I imagine it's cheap compared to American ski resorts (?).

Sochi is the shit. You ski Krasnaya Polyana in the morning and in the afternoon you sun youself at the beach or go shoot giant freakin deer. Nothing in your hellish Yankee backwater compares.

Its worth it for the apres scene alone. Skiing in the alps is also different because you're above the timberline

You don't do it just because you want to ski. You do it because you want to experience the location and also ski.

not much of a skier but went on a ski vacation with a group of folks to Swiss Alps - I took some awesome day trips and enjoyed the towns, cheese, wine, and night life was fun

worth it if you break trip up between skiing and seeing other sights
