A Hingham man faces up to 14 months in prison after pleading guilty in federal court to extortion for posing as a 16-year-old girl online and blackmailing a man after having e-mail conversations of a sexual nature. Brett T. Wohl, 25, a former Chicago resident, admitted on Tuesday that he had threatened to expose the e-mails to the victim's co-workers unless he wired money. Wohl was arrested in May after extorting a total of $5,000 from the victim, who then investigated the messages and discovered they came from a Chicago law firm where Wohl worked as a clerk. Wohl, who is free on bond, is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 15 in federal court in Chicago.

Federal investigators say a Chicago man surfed Internet chat rooms pretending to be gay, then threatened to expose a man's sexual orientation to his wife and family unless he was paid $5,000.
Brett T. Wohl of Chicago was charged with extortion in a federal criminal complaint filed Thursday, and federal authorities say it isn't his first brush with the law.
In October 2002, Wohl pleaded guilty to one felony count of extortion.
