basically I'm like a cat who dashes across the street when he sees a car coming instead of waiting for the car to pass -- I'm engaged in doing something (attacking the boss) and when unexpected pressure is put on me my response is DO IT HARDER. it just feels more concrete to react that way, with increased emotional intensity, rather than focusing on dodging, which is the way to win. dodging isn't directly rewarding the way attacking is, so even though you'll always eventually win if you don't get hit, I would never put that principle into practice because just dodging stuff and treading water doesn't feel like anything to me.

I could never derive any satisfaction from exercising that kind of discipline. the basic lesson of video game bosses -- that patience is a weapon -- was somehow always lost on me.

Also got to the end of paper mario on gamecube but couldn't beat the final boss because I didn't upgrade one particular skill enough during the game. Tried over and over, finally gave up.

You get 3 lives to make it through a level and get to the final tboss. Usually you have 1-2 lives left and lucky to have full health and magic bars. Then it's on and your timing has to be perfect because the boys can kill you with 5-8 hits whereas you have to hit him 15-20 times and at specific times and vulnerabilities.

Virtually impossible to be without game genie or save state emulators.
