For real though. Theyre just writing a paper that takes them years? Do they draw it out to avoid real work

Usually take classes for first 2 years. Plus you sometimes have to TA classes. Also you usually work basically as an employee for your advisor. He gets grants from the government to research and produce shit, and it's the PhD students who do that actual work.

Little structure and oftentimes just waiting for funding or getting by on little bits of it that slow research

Teaching is a huge time sink also

in technical fields they’re almost always people who were admitted because they were smart and could take tests well but who can't put together ideas of their own. so they delay until they put something together that’s not so shitty that their advisor won’t sign off on it. advisor will often just give them a pet topic to work on out of sympathy.

in non-technical fields they’re incompetent people and people who are kicking the can down the road before they’re forced to admit that they can’t get a good academic job, and they just put everything away to go teach prep school kids with or without having finished their degrees.

five years is generally the minimum though.

I loved TAing, jfc, I absolutely gave better grades to hot students

My biggest moment was seeing one of them out at a bar off campus in a different city and she confessed to thinking I was cute and had the goal to hook up with a TA; I made out with her in the bar but did not go further--this was 9-12 mo after I was her TA

Lol i remember all the girls in UG wanted to fuck almost all the male TAs. They would always talk about this. Even if they were average looking or short, something about them being in a position of "authority" attracted women. Women are insane

In the sciences it takes time to build a body of work that makes you competitive with the cohort that's graduating

In other words it should probably be 3 or 4 years instead of 5 or 6, and that is the case in Europe for many, but it's hard to change. Probably will slowly be pushed that way if there are no jobs forever.

also yeah it's nice to be unaccountable

Have a phd in statistics

Year 1 is core theory courses (plus a couple applied / elective courses)

After year 1 you take your comprehensive exams

Year 2-3 you take more electives, courses and seminars in your focus area while also TAing / RAing, during this time you find an advisor you want to work with.

Hopefully by end of 2nd year you start working with your advisor doing RA work and by year 3 start your thesis.

Year 3-5 is mostly research, reading papers, writing, TA work

After you graduate you then you fail the academic job market and get a cool job but wonder if it was even worth it.

advisors matter a lot too I imagine

Some advisors are SHIT and give students no actual advice or helpful input, so they could end up wasting a year going in a completely useless direction with their research

It's worse for physical sciences because you have to spend time doing field or lab work, which requires its own set of hoops to get funding/time for in many cases.

Also people can get fucked by their actual instruments. Our IRMS exploded? Sorry no money to replace that, you'll have to jockey for very limited use of the one in another lab and twiddle your thumbs.
