It has no national identity, which is why it has been a clusterfuck in a state of more or less constant civil war since the U.S. invaded. Remember how the Iraqi army that was trained and equipped by the U.S. completely dissolved and ran away once a group of ISIS amateurs attacked the city? The Shiite-dominated army wasn't interested in risking their lives defending a group of Sunnis from Sunni invaders (and knew full well that most of the residents of Mosul hated the army as much as they hated ISIS). The Iraqi military has always been SPS because they don't want to risk their lives defending a fake country consisting of a bunch of groups that they dislike (if not actively hate).
Iran is a completely different beast. It's been a country for at least 3000 years and is both ethnically and religiously homogeneous. Even if they don't like the ayatollahs, you can rest assured they will fight to the death if foreign invaders try to invade their motherland. The U.S. could probably achieve a paper "victory" since we would have complete domination of the air and could probably occupy Tehran and other major cities. But we'd be fighting constantly to maintain control, and the Treasury would soon go bankrupt trying to finance the operation. If the U.S. actually invaded Iran, that would be a disaster of unmitigated proportions. It would make the invasion of Iraq look like an overwhelming success by comparison. |
