Why do ppl sacrifice their prime years (20s/30s) to retirement comfortably?

I think a lot of this has to do with avoiding their spouses or an inability to say "no" or an identity that's wrapped up in their business or debts that still have to be paid (putting kids through college, bad financial decisions made or financial bad breaks in 20s/30s). |

I do worry what will happen when I'm 70 and useless. Fortunately the men in my family have a history of heart disease so I'm not to worried about living into my 80s. |

Maybe they have that sort of work ethic which tells them to sacrifice present comforts to ensure their future happiness.
Also, getting old without some degree of a nest egg sucks balls. Busting your ass in a crappy job sucks for your 20s and some of your 30s but you have the energy to do so, and there's a light at the end of the tunnel - either a waaaaay high salary or some cushy lower-paying but super chill (like remote work) role that you can afford to take because you busted ass earlier. |

Unfortunately, this is the time in your life where you tend to have the lowest income and the highest desire to explore life (party, travel, date, etc). You also may lock yourself down in a marriage during this time, which can involve kids and a mortgage.
The dood above has a biglaw salary but saves $10k/year, which is kinda rubbish for biglaw. I suspect an expensive wife is involved. |
