I think you're kinda correct, but do you understand what differentiates ethereum from other types of cryptocurrency? The ability to develop apps on top of the blockchain is a pretty powerful concept.

Every form of cryptography is eventually broken, it would be insane to use public blockchains for anything vital

This isn't really true. even very old block ciphers like DES are only broken in a practical sense because of small key lengths. The non-bruteforce attacks are mostly academic curiosities that don't compromise the ciphers in practice. I doubt 128 bit AES will ever be broken by humans in a situation where it is being used correctly.

It is pretty clear at this point that scalable quantum computers will be a reality in a few years though, which will require public key cryptography to be rethought.

People thought the Vigenere cipher was unbreakable for 300 years

SHA was just broken via collision attack, and computers are only getting more powerful

IBM and other companies are developing private blockchains.

Public blockchains would still be valuable in lots of areas. I think it would dramatically improve the UCC filing process, for instance.

I'm not sure, to be honest. I'm a believer in the blockchain and smart contract as concepts, but I'm essentially an ethereum agnostic at this point. The idea that large financial institutions are going to buy into using some completely unregulated cryptocurrency seems far-fetched to me.
