my thought:

2100 billables

100 pro bono

100 "firm hours" - recruiting, events, business development and the like.

This amount isn't horribly stressful but shows you are committed.

You will also not burn out quickly at this pace.

well people who coast only last a few years generally. 2100 will give you job security for a long time in most firms and will guarantee you bonuses each year.

200 of those hours are easy bullshit hours.

plus the CR is to bill as much as you can out of the office. In litigation this is easy. Just do a lot of contentions, research, filings at home. Come in for meetings, etc.

unless the partner you work for is obsessed with face time, you could easily bill 2100 hours with only 1500 hours in the office.

no - "you have to be in the office 300 hours more a year than you bill" is a very 3L notion.

most BIG LAW firm offices (outside of NYC) are ghost towns half the time.

I don't wonder why. I'm just surprised by who. The ones that seemed like the biggest gunners, who would do anything to be staffed on a high profile case were all the ones who left. Whereas the people who were whatever about it but just got their work done on time seem to be the only ones who survived.

or do you basically do a lot of different assignments but "round up .1 every time you can?"

why start with 2400? first year is the year no-one really cares about in terms of your hours, as most of it's probably written off anyways.

I'd say if you do the non-burnout strategy it should look more like this:

1600 -> 1800 -> 2000 -> 2100 -> 2100 -> 2000 -> 1800 -> 1600 -> exit

true, I'm just saying all things being equal.

though that wouldn't be a totally bizarre model assuming the firm is stable, as super junior associates don't have a reputation so they get less work. mid-levels start to get a lot more work if they are decent, then senior associates may find work a bit harder to come by again because their billing rate is so high.

well TBF, if you've been averaging 1700 hours a year, that's kind of low but still profitable for the firm... so if the firm is doing reasonably well overall there's no reason to fire you.

I'm surprised they haven't given you a stern talk about your consistently low utilization though.

1400 is really pushing it though, you should try to get that up.
