you'd actually come out and tell them you're not interviewing elsewhere?

may be a moot point as I'm pretty sure I've mentioned I was interviewing at different places during the process w/this firm but I can't imagine anyone would buy this anyway...

so how would you handle this? it wasn't an explicit "let us know by x or the offer is gone", just a "take the weekend to think about it, we would like to hear early next week"...

That really should be more than enough time. You either want it or you don't. What can you possibly do with more than 3 days other than try to use their offer to get more shit from current place.

then why does any firm ever give you more than a couple of days? my understanding is a week or two is standard practice, hence my OP.

it's standard at OCI for obvious reasons and I think that just carries over to lateral practices. firms are retarded. most companies want an answer within a few days.

I'm not sure if this is correct. at OCI i believe firms have to give you 28 days, so not really the same.

do you have experience with this? I have several friends who have lateraled and I've never heard of anyone being given less than a week to decide.

Right, so you can use their offer to try to get something better. Also, you could do this anyway. Just take the offer, set a start date like a month out if you can, and interview at the other firm. Should give you enough time

wouldn't backing out of an acceptance be a much worse move than asking for an extension? this seems like a pretty reckless/reputation-ruining maneuver...

just say you want to come back and meet some more people at the firm to make sure it's a good fit bc it's a big decision. that'll buy you some time.

Have you told the other firms that you got an offer? Put a lil pressure on them too. It's always worked well for me.

Sucks that the headhunter can't help you out with this (or rather is incentivized not to). If they aren't explicit about the offer expiry date, maybe when the weekend ends you can tell them that you're feeling really good about the offer but you have a few more questions / are in the process of doing a bit more DD or something like that - at that point, if they are serious about wanting your answer ASAP, they can let you know. It would be weird for them to retract their offer if they didn't explicitly tell you when it would expire.

3 days is ridiculous, sounds like their #2 choice is hounding them
