after seeing a gooky sounding pumo idiotically compare Trumps 100 days to LBJ's legislative accomplishments (in which he started with 63 Senators), i started wondering how common it is for one party to hold a super-majority.

some fun facts:

- Gerald Ford and IKe are the only potus to have a 60% plus majority opposition party.

- There hasn't been a 60% plus majority for 38 years. The next longest streak was between US Grant and Teddy, a mere 24 years.

- There hasn't been a 2/3 majority in 50 years. The next longest streak was 34 years, again between parts of Grant and Teddy's admins.

- James Monroe had 91% of the Senate at start of his second term - that's the all time high.

Subject: Obamacare

Obamacare passed the Senate With 58 Democratic votes and two independents that caucused with the Democrats. So that was another Congress with a functional Senate super majority.

Isn't the rule requiring 60 senators a relatively modern change? Didn't they used to require 2/3 for everything?
