ITT: help me plan 2 days in San Francisco

Date: May 10th, 2017 4:11 PM Author: territorial weed whacker Going for a conference in a few weeks, but will have most of Saturday and all Sunday to so as I please. I will be solo, and am an are country prole who has never been west of Texas. Staying around union square.
So far only plans are to: 1. Head to Dolores Park sat afternoon, cop some edibles 2. Hike Lands End 3. Walk around and find somewhere to eat.
No plans for Sunday..... North Beach area, maybe an Alcatraz tour?
need some suggestions from XO on the CR things to do/see/where to eat (that don't involve getting stabbed in the tenderloin)

If you're near Union Square, one possible itinerary is to walk from there to the wharf. You'll pass through Chinatown and North Beach, both of which are interesting neighborhoods. There are a number of interesting places you could stop and explore along the way: the cable car museum, the ferry building market, the Exploratorium, Coit Tower, Lombard St. That's just off the top of my head. Pier 39 (and the wharf generally) are among the most horrific tourist traps imaginable, but it's still worth a quick visit just to admire the sheer tackiness of it. And despite the tourist trap nature, eating clam chowder out of a sourdough bread bowl while overlooking the ocean is still pretty 180. As are the desserts at Ghiradelli Square.
You could also easily spend a day around Golden Gate Park without getting bored. The Japanese Tea Garden and Botanical Garden are 180 if you enjoy that sort of thing. The DeJong Museum and California Academy of Sciences are both worthwhile if you like art/science. It's a short distance from Haight-Ashbury (which is also basically a tourist trap these days, but still kind of fun). And you could easily combine a trip to Golden Gate Park with a trip to Land's End. Indeed, you could walk from the park to the Land's End trailhead if you were so inclined.
