I'm not sure where the Internet got this idea that Rice is prestigious. Texas is solid but doesn't hold a candle to UNC or UVa.
Duke is a strange case. It's debatable whether it should even be a "Southern" school given that virtually all of its students are Ivy rejects from the Northeast. And while it is probably the top overall university in the South by most measures of prestige, it has a stigma for being the safety school for striver Asians and Jews in New Jersey. If I see UNC or UVa on a resume, I think it's a probably an intelligent, chill southern bro who wanted to frat it up and slay pussy for a couple years before starting a high-paying job with minimal debt. When I see Duke, it's more like, "Damn. So you couldn't even get into Penn? That sucks, bro." I'm not so sure I don't consider UVa/UNC (or arguably other southern flagships) as more prestigious than Duke simply because most UVa/UNC bros went there because they wanted to whereas most Duke students settled for their safety school. |

She told me that when her students found out that she went to HYPS for undergraduate, the usual reaction was, "Oh wow. What was it like? I wanted to go there so badly but didn't get in." She virtually never met someone who grew up dreaming of going to Duke. Everyone wanted to attend an Ivy or Stanford/MIT but couldn't get in. She used to jokingly refer to Duke as "the highest-ranked safety school in the country."
Plus Duke admits tons of dumb rich kids to subsidize everyone else. To be fair, all elite schools (other than maybe CalTech) do that, but Duke is a particularly egregious offender (and particularly shameless about it). My friend had several stories about some student who never came to class and couldn't write a complete sentence but she wasn't allowed to fail because he was an heir to some fortune or whatever. So for these reasons, I see Duke as less prestigious than its ranking would indicate. |
