Small is the one real problem, especially if it comes with little land. Expanding space is a non-trivial task. The rest is easily fixed.

Small is fine unless you want a lot of kids or something. I would take a small place with great finishes over a huge one that's a big white box any day. To each his own though.

All the kids I knew growing up who lived in huge houses got into a lot of trouble. When you need an intercom to talk to your kids, they're probably off getting drunk/high/fucking without you even knowing.

Also being a close knit family seems 180 unless you're a dick. Doesn't apply if you have 3+ kids obviously.

being near proles is bad for your happiness.

it does suck to live in a "rich" place and be merely upper middle class, but the alternative is big timing in a town where kids die of H ODs and get knocked up.

Best to be UMC in a middle class neighborhood or rich in a UMC neighborhood Imo, from a happiness standpoint. This is also why living in a secondary city is better for your happiness than being in SV around a bunch of 20 yr old rich assholes

Eh, maybe. Some people who are UMC enjoy hanging out with the rich kids for aspirational/social status reasons, and if they just hung out with their MC friends in whatever secondary city they came from, they'd get more and more depressed after an initial feeling of "top of the heap".

20yo rich assholes are never a good time, but there's a lot more to SV than that (to the extent the stereotype even exists in measurable form). Most people I know at SV work at one of the FANG companies and make $350k or so a year (UMC), and I know a handful of people in their later 20s who work for smaller startups and make much less.

Right. Even a crappy house in a nice location will be worth more than a very nice and big house in a shit location.

For example, a nice 4000sq ft home on half an acre in South Central Los Angeles won't be worth as much as a small 1150 sq ft home in Newport Beach that has 1970s appliances, terrible carpet, and a broken garage door

To me crappy means unfixable like small or awkward layout. Anything else you can fix for 20k or whatever. In a nice area, that will mean it's a little house but probably owned by a rich guy or old person.

most parents don't plan on private school. being in a top school district makes your place an instant seller/rental. everybody wants in on those places.

idk you'd be surprised a lot of people are set on it

most people who go to expensive private schools are from places with perfectly fine public schools

lots of wealthy parents just do it because they went to that school so they send their kids there

i went to a shitty/unprestigious private school and still like 80%+ of my class were legacy students

it's a little bit of a crap shoot. the public schools--at least in my town and county--are top shelf on a national level (if you can really measure that tbh, but they toot the shit outta of it). if i hadn't inherited (kinda) my house, no way could i afford to live here. shit, many of the people on my block are millionaires, i have no doubt.

What do you mean by crappy? I'm generally in favor of buying the smallest house on a "wealthy" street as property values will generally stay strong. But this house that I'm envisioning is still a nice house in terms of fixtures being up to date.

I do NOT agree with buying fixer-uppers unless you know what the hell you're doing with respect to building.
