Many mass media articles, when reporting on the whole thing, also reported on this open letter, quoted this line and pretended it was truth.

Google could have easily just said that nothing in the memo actually creates a hostile work environment because it's discussing broad populations rather than individuals, that it encourages debate and free thinking, and that it wasn't going to do a damn thing about the memo. Anybody that is too offended to work at Google can leave.

Google would earn a lot of people's respect, and it would die down after their next quarterly results.
