what's in it for them? My company matches 100 percent of my 401k and it got me wondering: do they get any tax breaks? why would they want to waste money from their own pocket for my 401k?

it makes do damn sense... anyways i wont want to do the 401k thingy. i think it's a boomer scam. and i also need the money.

you always go AT LEAST to the match. it's free money that you would likely have to save anyways. iirc, it lowers you AGI as well.

Is there any tax benefit that employer match has over a salary increase?

I get that not all employees will use the match. But I also think tons of employees will not correctly view the match as income. Maybe the match functions as a raise only for those employees who read the fine print and care.

bc matching was conceived of as a (poor) substitute for pensions. it wasn't that long ago your employer was supposed to fully fund your retirement w a defined benefit.
