The democrats gerrymandered the fuck out of the US south when the Dixiecrats ruled it, it really took until 2010 to overturn this in places like North Carolina |

if you look at state maps from the last election it's noticeable that Democrats won a lot more "swingy" areas by small margins (e.g., huge suburban counties like Orange, Westchester, Fairfield, Loudon, etc. etc.) where the majority of our country lives.
Republicans offset this by winning rural areas by massive margins, almost at the rate Democrats win most big cities by.
If they really wanted to they could extend these districts outside of the counties. but they don't appear to want to do anything but whine.
The Democrat popular vote win was actually more about the suburbs than the big cities. |

Democrats could easily break up cities and counties to have the opposite impact... for instance just extend San Francisco and LA area districts all the way out to the eastern border of CA.
