https://www.amazon.com/Linux-Programming-Interface-System-Handbook/dp/1593272200 unfortunately I've forgotten 80% of this because I never have the chance to use it, but it's remarkably well-written.

https://www.amazon.com/Effective-Modern-Specific-Ways-Improve/dp/1491903996/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453298759&sr=8-1&keywords=effective+modern+c%2B%2B another book I loved but haven't really had the chance to use any of my knowledge IRL, but much easier information to retain. Should be required reading for anyone who writes C++

the only programming book I've ever read is the Pragmatic Programmer. Everything else is following value-adders on twitter and reading essays and talking with people in the industry.

I don't think they're as worthwhile with leetcode around. You'll basically learn the same shit but with more up to date (read: harder) questions

Maybe more importantly you can see what questions are more common on leetcode. Lots of non-big 4/5 companies especially end up asking the same ones

Programming interviews are 100% flame. Careful inspection of the cost of software (CPU, RAM, Hard Drive) takes time.

All you need to know about this bullshit that you should avoid N+1 queries/operations.

The software industry is currently composed of people who could displace 100 useless people if it were politically feasible. In a way, retarded boomer managers also want to ignore their own malfeasance, so it makes sense to not appear TOO smart in interviews with boomers if you are a A-tier technology employee.

Yeah. Do you know how to avoid firing N queries to the database? Can you describe the difference between O(log(n)) and O(n)?

Can you tell us the purpose of database indices? Can you also tell us why we don't index every DB column?

If you made it this far, congrats! You are highly qualified!

My point is that the day to day requirements of quality software development are about teamwork, planning, cleverness, and depending on company size, soft skills like communication and empathy.

A random candidate's ability to solve your riddles says nothing about those skills. This is why credited software firms trust referrals the most.
