Like some guy said in the rust thread "good luck finding a good rust developer"
If you become proficient in an underutilized/niche language, might be easier to stand out even if the overall number of opportunities are lower
Tempted to do this with Julia or something but the effort is probably better used getting better at R or python

you have it backwards
people who are highly proficient in niche areas are generally the cs ubermenschen to begin with. when a company is looking for an erlang developer or whatever it comes with the implicit assumption that they are pretty experienced in general with development as they will need fairly deep technical knowledge
