My impression is that they are driven by
1) old doods---average age of men buying new ones is 63 or thereabouts
2) older crappy ones are driven by people who just need a cheap car
3) people who are into cars/racing and like the way it handles.
I think you could get the new one and not really be subject to any "stigma" as people don't seem to recognize it as a miata.
You should drive one, though. They're very fun. Personally I prefer the mr2 spyder but it's wildly impractical as it has no trunk.
