Since my review of EVA's Business class was triggering for SO many of jjc's pumos, I felt that a review of the flight back from Asia would be a good idea.

While EVA Biz was CRRRR as fuck, Cathay Pacific F absolutely PWNS it.

Normally, when you get to Hong Kong station to cop DAT airport express, you can do in town check-in, get your boarding pass and check bags if you have any (LJL). Sadly, this is no longer an option if you're flying to the US, so I took off for HKG with <><><>NOBOARDINGPASS<><><>,

CX has a fairly TTT dedicated F check-in: https://imgur.com/a/zUd1m . When I got there, I was told this wasn't available for flights to the US either. I had to go answer security questions and get a sticker on my passport before they could give me a boarding pass.

Cathay has a few F lounges at HKG, but the FlyerTalk aspies seem to think The Pier is the best, and since I was at the airport 4+ hours before my flight, I figured I would post up there. (Entrance: https://imgur.com/a/7PUFy , Main Hallway: https://imgur.com/a/2EKFF ).

There's a restaurant with an a la carte menu: https://imgur.com/a/2PuAQ . Other facilities include rooms you can reserve, a bar, a lounge, showers and all the other stuff you'd expect. It's a very nice, pleasant lounge, but not amazing.

Usually CX 840 departs from gate 3 or 4 which is far from The Pier, but it was swapped to a nearby gate in the 40's.

Our plane today was a Boeing 777-300ER, registration B-KPG: https://imgur.com/a/TclRX . CX only has 6 seats of F, laid out 1-1-1 in two rows. I think 1A is the most private, so I selected it for this flight: https://imgur.com/a/mRlhK

Before takeoff they brought me some nuts and a Hong Kong style milk tea: https://imgur.com/a/j67v6

After departure the NOWAG stews set the table and left me a handwritten note saying they hoped I would enjoy the flight. Then came the meal service with DAT caviar, DAT soup, DAT salad, a bone in steak that was actually rare, cheese and dessert: https://imgur.com/a/RjGKp . NOTE: CX eliminated DAT amuse bouche a few months ago.

They were pouring good champagne that I didn't partake in, and in addition to the dinner menu there were snacks and BRIKFUSS pre-arrival: https://imgur.com/a/MkFBc . It was a bit odd that BRIKFUSS was on offer, since the flight was set to land around 8pm MFH time.

I watched Birdman, which was good, Churchill which was a complete pile of shit and Hell or High Water which I also enjoyed, then passed the FUCK out until we were ~30 minutes from JFK: https://imgur.com/a/A1iXX .

After DAT CX seat is put in bed mode and they do DAT turndown service it's at least close to if not as comfortable as most hotel beds. It really helps when you can get good sleep, which there's plenty of time for on a 15+ hour flight like this.

Bottom line, CX fucking PWNS. I hate cashing in extra AA miles (110k one way) for the splurge to F, but if you're going to be on a plane for 15+ hours and you have the miles to burn it's worth it.

Didn't realize it was 1-1-1.

Looking to do HKG in next year.

Probably best to fly out on JAL or ANA F, then come back via CX to hit up the lounge.

haven't flown JL F, but NH F is CR. I prefer CX to NH though. If you're W.Coast based you could cop SQ F, one of the SQ flights from LAX or SFO (maybe both) connects in HKG on the way to SIN, so you could just book the W.Coast-HKG leg.

yeah, I've done NH F twice.

I'd like to try SQ, but based in ARE country. Don't want to mess with separate tix. U can't book via United?

Always need to connect in ORD or IAH/DFW.

Probably will try out CX F, but want to originate in HKG for that.

Do you use that expertflyer to track down availability?

SQ blocks longhaul premium availability to all partners except (I think) Lufthansa. You can move AMEX or Chase points to SQ though. Normally I would say just transfer and book a *A award, but generally SQ awards are much more reasonable than *A awards through SQ, so fuck that.

If you're going through ORD, NH seems to be decently easy to snag.

For avail I use the BA award search engine to find CX and for NH I use the UA search tool.

I used to live in HK when it was still a British Colony as a kid what seems like a lifetime ago- really good times dude. The Mandarin Oriental does a great eggs Benedict. Your a New Yorker right? If your a member of a club like the NYAC you can get a recip for the American Club in HK next time you hit it - great place in HK for expats to get together.

You mean going over the fucking buildings and freeways and shit when the plane would bank that turn? That was lulzy because for a second it looked like it would be scraping the tops of these apartment complexes.

If I remember right the pilots had to have special training to do that approach. Never really felt super sketchy to me (but then again what did I know - I was a kid) but it was fun to see

Yup, that's the one, looks 18000. VFR only, make a big turn coming onto final and basically level the wings as the wheels touch the ground. I don't think there was ever a major crash on that approach which is shocking.
