The basic threshold of living in a nice neighborhood with good public schools would cost about the same, net of transportation costs, and while non-housing, non-transportation costs would be lower they wouldn't move the needle that much. In NYC your wife doesn't have to have a car, let alone a fancy one she won't be embarrassed by in front of her UMC frenemies, and there's no shame in renting as opposed to pressure to climb the housing ladder. Of course it's nice to have lots of land and space, just as it's nice to have lots of cool places to walk to and neighborhood amenities. My biggest issue with NYC is the insufferable liberalism, and I'll probably end up in a red state for that reason alone, but economically I think the difference is overstated. Own all cars as well. Have three kid dudes and a sahm. We all live on my 100+k salary. It's fine. We don't eat out much anyway. Eating out with kids sucks. But plenty of take out options nearby. The basics - chinese, indian, mexican, italian, vietnamese are easily available. And ofcourse plenty of good bbq and burgers joints. Love to be able to go to a store, park my car, and shop in wide aisles.
Cons: - That home has been 230k for the last couple of year whereas I have seen homes of friends in some other markets (sv/ny) appreciate like crazy. - Not much culture-wise in the burbs though. Mostly just chill with neighbors and do bbqs, craw fish boils, watch football, etc. - People are proles. Lots of shitheads in pickup trucks. Makes driving difficult sometimes. - long commutes. if you can get a job where you can work from home then it's ideal otherwise easily 1 hour commutes each way. - houston has shit weather
