A white trash bitch wanted to know why this shampoo was ringing up for sixty cents over the marked price. An old man didn't know how to use the ATM and demanded immediate assistance. A black kid started putting a bottle of liquor in his jacket. A moron wanted to know why the store brand was on sale while the name brand was not. And keep in mind that all of this was happening while I was literally trapped at the front register with a line of angry people. It went on like this for a solid hour until my boss finally showed up, Starbucks in hand. He just nodded at me and disappeared into his office without a word. When I arrived, I was told they had a project for me out back. No problem, right? Well, it seemed that homeless people had broken into the garbage corral and smeared human feces all over everything. It was cold that morning, and the shit was fresh enough that it steamed in the cool air, a smell that I won't soon forget. As I cleaned and tidied, I could only wonder what happened to the ambition of my youth. Law school! Friends! A great career in the big city! All gone. I stood back there for probably an hour or more, cleaning up a horrifying stew of feces, garbage, and discarded needles that almost certainly were infected with HIV if not worse. After getting everything taken care of -- and using a lot of store brand cleaner that I just took off the shelf -- I went back inside to do some absurd paperwork and make sure everything was in place for the feared "corporate visit" that never materialized. There's a mechanism in the inventory system that is supposed to check these things, but for some reason it didn't work. And that's probably because the software hasn't been updated since 1986. Anyway, I'm sitting there in the warehouse staring at ten pallets of cookies, trying to figure out how I'm going to explain this fiasco. At that moment, the cashier frantically got on the intercom and screamed for help. It seems that some guy -- a white meth addict -- had jumped the counter and taken the till. The cashier was crying, and as I approached I could hear police sirens getting closer. It was officially a robbery, and we had to close for a few hours. When I saw my boss the next day, the robbery and "employee safety" was all we talked about. Nobody cared about the inventory mishap, and we just sent most of it to other area stores.
