It seemed really strange at the time. Some scenes are really resonating with me now, though
The movie broke a lot of Star Wars conventions, like using flashbacks. A lot of the designs were over the top even by prequel standards, and a lot of the effects had a cartoonish feel.
It was also weird how they used a lot of modern idioms. Poe actually says "Big ass gun"
A lot of it had the pacing and stylings of a LOTR movie, come to think of it

It's by no means bad. I really want to see it again. It'll take another watch to decide whether it's very good or just good.
The opening battle is really good, and it's not quite anything from any other SW movie
