Fuck. Fuckfuckfuck. Sorry, man. That is heartbreaking.
We *WILL* find ways to effectively screen for this shit (and maybe even reverse in live humans but that's a pipedream) in our lifetimes. We must.

Just make sure you put him in a good one and he could end up happier than he ever was before. Constant attention, friends, etc. I'm sure your parents will visit often.
Get Rach to give him an account and he can poast.

Brother, my wife and I are active in our local special olympics community and honestly I’ve seen nothing but positive change in the folks I’ve watched move from mom and dad’s place to a group home.
There’s this one autistic guy named Matt. My wife and I used to joke about what an asshole Matt was the first year while he was still living with his mom. He was rude, dismissive, and condescending. In other words, he was a total dick. After that first season he ended up moving to a group home and change I saw in this kid after just a few months was astounding. Now this guy is always encouraging others, high fiving people, and is just an all around cool bro. I’ve seen nothing but positivity from this kid since he made the move. No shit he’s one of my favorite guys now, and I’ve seen similar changes in every single person I’ve watched make the move.
Brother don’t sweat it. He’ll be better for it.

it's rough, at first. but i think he'll be fine. my highschool was a regional program center for young people with cognitive impairments. it was a wing of the building with several classrooms, a kitchen, a sports room, etc. they had a system of classes for other students to learn how to volunteer with /teach/etc. the students in the program, and i did that all four years.
the "what next" issue was always in the background - the state provided funding for program students to attend until age 21, at which point something else had to happen. in practice, their exit from the program would usually be timed at the graduation which occurred before their 21st birthday, so that they got to be part of the ceremonies and have a natural conclusion to their schooling at summer break.
group homes and co-living setups were good because they provided a strong peer group. if you think of the isolated and stand-offish nature of a lot of high-IQ people, people on the other side of the curve tend to be the opposite - they don't have some kind of hall-of-mirrors mental interiority that makes the external world superfluous; they are closer to some existential current which doesn't self-ignite, but gets going hot and strong when it gets animated by its surroundings and by peers.
one big motivator is the idea that they will be able to meet girls. this often just doesn't happen when they are living with parents. or, actually, on their own. solo living is just ultimately too many things to manage and too many judgments to make, which leads to a gradual breakdown and frustration with themselves. a home removes those burdens, which is a great mercy over time.
the transition from one residential state to another is the rough part, but once there is some adaption to the new reality with new peers, things can get very good. for him, because of the new energy, for your folks because of the eased burden of care, and for yourself because you're going to see him doing well. people worry about "abandonment" when this kind of shift takes place, but it's more like a sapling going from the pot to the forest. it's good to be living around friends, and he will be, more than any of us.
