best way to actually figure this out is to go to the school districts as prospective citizens and ask about the school (idk if you can if you don't have kids). my parents did that because they did not want me growing up in a super jewish jappy shit hole like Roslyn or Jericho. this was in the 90's though. no idea if you can do this anymore.
I actually have no idea how you would be able to figure this out without knowing someone in town or going through the whitepages. maybe drive around in december? |

taxes in CT much lower than in Westchester, though Rye is on the low end for Westchester. Greenwich is incredibly low, though more than made up for by house prices. D/NC/W all have "low" taxes by Westchester standards, especially because they have commercial bases. as you get off the coast to places like wilton, ridgefield, weston, taxes get a lot higher. |

I'd much rather pay more for house and less for tax, and in some respects I think the affluent towns in CT are a little nicer and more centralized than the ones in NY. If you wanted to be much closer to the city like in Hastings or Bronxville or Scarsdale, that might be a diff story.
My one issue with Greenwich is that is is shockingly expensive. Your money goes way, way farther in Darien/New Canaan/Westport, and all three are still really nice, affluent towns. Something you get for $4M in Greenwich might be more like $3M in Darien and $2.5 in NC/Westport. |

Westport has a great beach, but Greenwich has an awesome downtown with a lot more going on. And the estates in Greenwich are awesome, with a lot more old architecture.
It's also a lot closer to NYC than Westport, though in some respects that's predicated on DM being close to the train line. Being in back country Greenwich is gonna add 20 mins to his commute, so if he's in northern Greenwich he might as well look in D/NC/W.

he's not going to be living in Byram.
this brings up a good point though. In greenwich, you do have a swath of lower class people in Byram. when you combine that with the HUGE amounts of wealth all over the town, you get a school system that has some lower class kids but also loses a ton of upper class kids to private/boarding schools. that's the main reason why schools in Darien/NC/Westport are "better" (same with affluent Westchester towns like Bronxville, Scarsdale, Rye, Armonk, Chappaqua, etc.) |

If you live in the northern half of Greenwich it can easily take you 10-20 mins to get to the train in the am, which puts it on par with Westport if you live, say, south of Post Road. agree that if you live in downtown Greenwich the commute is much better.
Some of the stations are in nice residential neighborhoods. Riverside and Old Greenwich, Noroton Heights (Darien), Rowayton (Norwalk but near Darien), Westport, Greens Farms (in Westport). |
