Okay, so what laws can we have to would bring gun deaths down from tens of thousands annually to negligible levels similar to most other countries on earth, without infringing on the esoteric and shifting definition of "liberty" used by those who oppose these laws. Don't victims of violence also have rights?
Japan is an incredible free country by the way, with plenty of liberty.
What laws do I want? I want the ones that they have. They seem to work most well.
The more guns you have in a society, the more gun violence there will be. This is irrefutable.
If you want to buy a gun in Japan you have to attend an all-day class, take a written exam and pass a shooting-range test with a mark of at least 95%.
I like this.
There are also mental health and drugs tests. Your criminal record is checked and police look for links to extremist groups. Then they check your relatives too - and even your work colleagues. And as well as having the power to deny gun licences, police also have sweeping powers to search and seize weapons.
^All of this.
The law restricts the number of gun shops. In most of Japan's 40 or so prefectures there can be no more than three, and you can only buy fresh cartridges by returning the spent cartridges you bought on your last visit.
^I would like see authorized gun retailers have to undergo much more strict supervision and accounting. It's not restricting rights, it's encouraging personal responsibility and compliance as a gun owner.
There are other things that greatly increase gun violence like proliferation of gang culture and social inequality. But taking common sense steps to bring our insane levels of gun violence more in line with the rest of the world and saving many lives is an admirable goal we should pursue and can pursue without infringing on "rights", those of which you haven't actually elaborated on. If it's just a vague notion of "liberty" that's not worth the price of thousands upon thousands of deaths annually. What about the rights of victims of gun violence?

When I was naive, I used to think gun people would agree to restrictions on guns because they were "sportsmen." I mean my family likes to hunt. Maybe you could add in some hand guns for home protection. But no. Gun culture dudes are preparing for the downfall of society (thanks Libs) and every effort to restrict guns will be seen as a step towards the downfall of society and an effort to make them helpless to fight against the coming hordes.
