Walled gardens. There has been a behavioral change in people's use of the web. They visit fewer sites than they used to.

In the future a distributed web will be forced because of government action, and Google will miss the boat on that like Microsoft missed the boat on the original web.

In 20 years the web will be distributed and access to large swathes of it will be based on trust relationships.

People thought in the 90s that Microsoft would dominate computing like Standard Oil did the energy industry.

Then the web happened. The web's successor will not be dominated by the same firms because their cultures will have ossified and be unable to adapt.

what in the fuck are you talking about?

Microsoft has always primarily built OS software. That's what they're good at. They dominated that industry for decades and still do to a degree. wtf does Microsoft have to do with "the web"?

Exactly. People thought the OS was the forever monopoly during the PC era. But technology evolved and the OS became a commodity.

I think MS's future is the cloud. OS and office software is yesterday's news.

Microsoft's current market cap is >700B. If they want to dominate cloud computing, they will.

They are competing with Amazon and Google. It's not the 90s anymore.

Cloud computing is already becoming passe and will become a commodity as well. These companies all have half-lives.

lol man, I don't think you really understand the strength and power of these companies at all.

Setting Microsoft aside, Amazon and Google do an incredible amount of different things. They have their bread and butter online services, they make consumer products, they have numerous pet projects that will pay huge dividends as tech gets more advanced (see: Google's self-driving cars). They have FUCK-YOU MONEY that they can use to crush virtually any niche they choose. They are not going anywhere.

Watson was a publicity stunt.

GE is in a really bad way after Immelt's tenure.

What sort of person wants to work at these companies? Most of their staff are just clock watchers.

The scamification of SV has really gotten out of control and lasted farther beyond what I could have even thought remotely possible.

Companies like Uber are total frauds that have just been allowed to grow and operate in an unchecked fashion like some sort of disease. Other companies like Twitter were a revolving door with the Obama administration.

Luckily when interest rates climb, VC capital begins to dry up. Higher interest rates also force more rational equity valuations to manifest.

Now, some of these companies do thing which are important and provide value, but in many cases it is just a question of valuation of the shares relative to actual economic output.

But holy shit.
