Shouldn’t the relevant statistic be number of gun owners vs number of guns? It’s not like having 10 guns makes someone more or less likely to be a mass shooter

What, do you think that the multiple gun spirits possess you if you own more than one?

Its one thing to say that correlation does not equal causation but I suspect that if we did a close study, number of guns owned and likelihood of being a mass shooter are highly correlated.

I’m saying 3% of population own about half the guns in the US

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/09/gun-ownership-america-super-owners/

Also, a smaller proportion of Americans own guns today than in 1994.

From same article

“ The new data also sheds more light on the shrinking proportion of Americans who own guns, which dropped from 25 percent in 1994 to 22 percent in 2015, when the survey was conducted. A recent Mother Jones investigation into the nation’s 10 biggest gunmakers noted similar findings: While gun ownership is on the decline, gun owners are stockpiling weapons in record numbers, keeping aloft the nearly $8 billion firearms industry.”

I think the % of gun owners vs the total # of guns is a more relevant stat because a mere increase in the # of guns doesn’t mean that more ppl have guns

so the percentage of Americans who own guns has been shrinking, while the number of mass shootings has gone up? in other words, prevalence of gun ownership in American is correlated with FEWER mass shootings?

hmmm, libs?

It’s awkward that media outlets have banner viewership days every time a mass shooting happens and they report on 24/7 but they never entertain the obvious fact that achieving celebrity/immortality as a mass shooter is 100% the greatest cause of mass shootings.

Someone posted recently speculating on why there are no more serial killers, just mass shootings. They attributed it to our instant-gratification culture. A serial killer used to revel in the planning, the attention from the media, the fear it invoked. Mass shooters have the same but without the patience to kill one at a time. They just do one big shooting.

the first graph has an r^2 of .0322 . that means that ownership rate explains only 3% of the variance under that regression. usually an r^2 of .2 is considered a "small association"

the second graph has either very inaccurate or very outdated homicide rates. DC's homicide rate is about 40% of what is claimed in that graph, for example.

the third one, i don't even know wtf is supposed to be going on there. it's lulzworthy.
