ljl at this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5410167/NBCs-terrible-Olympics-worse-week-two.html
so, us sports tv coverage is basically entirely manufactured around SELLING A NARRATIVE, and the entire thing falls apart because the media cant control the narrative with live sports and anything can happen

I've poasted ad nauseum on xo about how American sports fans don't like sports -- they like celebrity and events and winning.
Funnily enough I was thinking about making a thread about how I've found I specifically dislike the narratives because it gives me rooting interest, and then I end up disappointed. My favorite events are the ones where I don't have a rooting interest because I can just watch the competition.

I don't know how any sports fan can't find something they like during the Olympics. The breadth of offerings is staggering.
But maybe you just equate boring with "not popular", in which case you're basically a woman.
Let me guess, favorite sports are football, baseball, golf, etc? All the really popular ones here?

Yes, because it's what I grew up playing and watching. Not sure how that negates my point.
The reason people find them boring is irrelevant. Your point was that "American sports fans don't like sports -- they like celebrity and events and winning."
I don't think that's true. They just don't like olympic sports.

"Despite surface appearances to the contrary, the consumer age is deathly boring. Boredom is caused, not because an activity is inherently boring, but because it is not meaningful to the person. Since the life of the consumer revolves around the overkill of meaningless manufactured low-level material desires, it is quickly engulfed by boredom, as well as jadedness, ennui and discontent."

i.e., you basically let mass media dictate to you what you like. no sport is inherently more boring than another. luge is not inherently more boring than sprinting in track.

but 2 winter olympics ago we were just crushing it in all the snowboard and freestyle events when they were basically new.
and yes we might be getting beat by the Netherlands, but the Netherlands medals are basically all from long track speed skating, so who cares?
i will say our speed skating team has really hit the shits. we used to be so good at speed skating.

>> we're still medaling in the snowboard and freestyle events. <<
but not as much. and it will get worse as they get more competitive.
we are still very very good at alpine skiing, though a bit of an off year with the men as bode has retired and ted ligety is about to. the women are still pretty good.
hockey offers a single men's medal and we're in the finals for the women.
figure skating we have been very very good the last 20 years.
i agree that we have taken a huge hit in speed skating, but we have made a lot of gains in xc skiing and nordic combined.

Why are you guys watching the SPS nbc coverage?
Just watch the sports streams/live feeds. There's even an NBC app for smart TVs that lets you watch any sport you want.

btw, did you know the IOC set event start times to help out NBC's coverage bc they get so much money from NBC?
so events like figure skating are taking place in the morning in Pyeongchang, when they would normally be in the evening.

>> why do US Open tennis matches go on at 11 PM or after midnight and then go until 2 or 3 in the morning? is that natural "preparation"? <<
prime time ratings $$. that's proving my point.
and yes, but competitions are always at night
they did the same thing with biathalon -- NBC asked that it be held at night so they could show it in the morning, nevermind that its colder and windier and harder to shoot at night.

yes, you can do that and it's good.
again, NBCSN has been much better about this. it's regular NBC, and especially the prime time coverage, that is worse about this.
you can literally see their coverage get worse depending on how many idiots they think they can rope in.
