Disney probably only nets like 10% of the gross on this stuff. The movies cost a shitload, and then you have all of their overhead and shit, plus the cost to buy reviews (i.e. "marketing").

I guess since they have Toy Rights, this is all moot, but still. So the Films are an outlet for marxist propaganda and the Toys are the moneymakers? How many fuckin toys are there really? How much does Disney get when an incel buys an $800 lego millenium falcon?

You have to think about it over the long run and the various revenue streams.

1. One movie per year.

2. At least one video game per year.

3. All the merchandising, merchandising, merchandising (thanks Mel Brooks).

That said, Disney has fucked it up by letting idiots run the franchise so no, all that still won't ever result in a good ROI.

If they don't get their shit together the revenues from future films could drop off a cliff as people completely lose interest. They've probably done some irreversible damage already. But anyway I thought I read that between the three out already that they'd already made their money back (not suggesting they couldn't have made a better $4 billion investment though).

I think Disney wildly overestimated the market for SW movies, and I don't see it as a viable 1 movie a year franchise in perpetuity, even if they were better than the current terrible product. SW "demand" was based more on artificial scarcity caused by Lucas's reluctance to make more. Its also something of a zombie franchise based on 3 movies made 40 years ago (prequels? lol) and there is only so much you can mine from those. And Disney seems to have extreme reluctance to create any new mythology.

cr Phantom Menace was hot buttered garbage, but it had 17 years of pent-up demand behind it. Now it's like wow, another star Wars already?

If you look at the toy aisle it is split 50/50 between Darth Vader/Yoda stuff and the Rey stuff. That's a very bad sign for Disney that the new movies aren't getting any traction.

But even the Phantom Menace had some new memorable character. Darth Maul/Count Dooku were at least kind of cool and not blatant ripoffs of Vader the way Darth Emo is. Rey is also just a more preposterous and girl power version of Luke Skywalker. Even young Obi-wan in the prequels was more successful as a character than anything they had in the recent movies.

I think you meant "Marvel", not "comic book movies", and Marvel works because they developed a very consistent lowest-common denominator style that is also popular oversees. It has almost nothing to do with Marvel IP (did anyone know or care about the "Iron Man" or the "Ant Man" or the "Black Panther Man" until those movies were made?). No point in paying billions to get SW IP then try to force into a Marvelish style which would clash and just piss off actual SW fans.

Non sequitur ballparked costs at $750 million. They still make a great deal more on that investment than most studios make on most movies. They also bought all the Star Wars cartoons, video games, other licensing and merchandising. The movies drive the revenue of all this other shit. It's short-sighted and ignorant of how these properties are valuable to say "derrrrr the movies are too expensive and sometimes don't do good in Asia!" It's one of the single most valuable properties in entertainment and they have already cleared close to a billion on the new films.

Only the XO aspie brain trust would take a look at Star Wars and think "haha, Disney got cucked!" because the board vaguely perceives the most recent movie as underperforming.

"I am assuming that they turn like a 10% profit on these when all is said and done" you seem dumb and you're clearly just pulling that number from your ass.

1) non sequitur's math makes a lot more sense than yours. industry standard assumption is that a film is profitable in theaters if its total (incl international) revenue is > 3-3.5x production budget, which the last movie easily satisfies. this does not include revenue from DVD sales/rentals, i.e. TLJ presumably started delivering a hard dollar profit after it crossed $700mm theater receipts. sales/rentals will be another $400mm+ which is all gravy.

2) "They have a ton of overhead that isn't accounted for in the 'budget' of these films that is completely inestimable and could be extravagant." Again, either you're pulling this out of thin air or your statement would apply equally to basically any big budget action film (MCU, Star Trek franchise, etc), which is not, by itself, a persuasive reason to assume standard industry metrics per 1 don't apply. Also your completely amorphous "number numbers they don't tell the whole story" bullshit cuts both ways. Disney is likely to realize additional revenue and profit from the star wars brand that's difficult to calculate but still contributes to the bottom line. For example, adding Star Wars rides and attractions to Disney theme parks will almost certainly increase ticket sales to their parks, even though it's difficult to calculate just how many marginal tickets are being sold to guests who otherwise wouldn't pay $400/head to stand around in line at some theme park in FL/CA.

I think they will make money in the long run, sure, but we don't really know how much any of this shit costs so hear me out -

Lucas was worth an estimated $1.5 billion before the sale of Star Wars. Lucas made all of these movies after the first one with his own money. He owned Lucasfilm, and Lucasarts, and got licensing fees from all of the Legos and everything else for 30 years. Still only worth $1.5 billion. And that's including all of his other ventures too like Indiana Jones and shit. Assuming that every movie henceforth will gross less and less, and assuming that the combined ~$6 billion of inflation-adjusted gross of the OT+PT and 30 years of licensed crap was only enough to net $1.5 billion (assuming he didn't just invest in fuckin' pets.com or some shit), what do you think of the deal Disney made now? Just stating opinions, don't shoot the messenger.

The new movies are horrible but it was a great deal for Disney. These aren't Star Wars movies coming out; they are Marvel movies with Marvel characters with Star Wars skins on them

They paid $4 billion. So far they've released 3 movies which have made $4 billion. They are making like 6 more movies as we speak. They are making TV shows and cartoons. The president of Canada wears Star Was socks. Petco is filled with Star Wars dog toys. They are building a giant Star Wars wing of Disney World.

How can you not think it's a great deal for Disney? Star Wars is basically the licensing equivalent of "red" at this point. "Does your kid want a red backpack or a Star Wars backpack?" "Do you want a red USB storage or a Star Wars USB storage?" "Do you want a red mailbox or a Star Wars mailbox?"

The movies grossed whatever they grossed, but we have no idea what the net is. And we have no idea what putting Yoda on a pair of socks is actually worth.

So far this acquisition has been complete garbage. Disney still hasn't felt the full effects of how atrocious Star Wars 8 was.

8 was utter PC trash that dramatically underperformed at the box office. It could very well ruin their company.

This is how I feel too.. I think Solo was destined to fail even before 8 but I think 9 will really underperform too.

This. I don't get this thread. In hindsight the deal makes sense at 2x or 3x.

You’re forgottening the theme park tie-ins. The Star Wars resort they’ll eventually build at WDW will instantly become their #1 property. Plus the lands at Disneyland and Disney World. $100+ plus a day ticket to buy a $20 coke from the Cantina-themed drink stand.

Yeah but they probably could've done this w/o having to buy Lucasfilm outright. They've had Star Tours for 30 years, right?

Keep in mind that they bought Lucasfilm for $4B, not just SW. That includes other IP (thought Indiana Jones is probably the only good one). It also includes ILM and Skywalker Sound, which do fx for lots and lots of big movies. ILM has to insanely valuable to Disney on its own

Just the movies to date have grossed more than $4 billion and that's just world wide box office to date.

Someday they'll rerelease the original versions of the original trilogy and make a killing on that.

A lot of people here just don't get they bought a lot more than the right to make new SW movies for 4bn
