Continued my run of Evelyn Waugh by reading Decline and Fall, his first published work.

Was a stranger book than I expected (though after Vile Bodies I really should have learned my lesson). It's called a satire of the British school system but that's really only the first half of the book and even most of that section is really just a send-up of British society at large rather than the school system. The funniest parts of the book IMO are Paul's stay at a reform-minded prison and, of course, the out-of-nowhere burst of anti-Welsh racism.

I think I'll keep my run of Waugh going for now. I think I'll do A Handful of Dust next, then wrap up his "early" novels with Put Out More Flags. Then I'll either read his Campion biography or perhaps take a break for some history and sci-fi.

the scene where he's in the courtyard of that prison walking with the crazy 'lion' guy is also one of my favorites.

Did you like Brideshead Revisited?

Yeah that scene was amazing, as well as every scene with the prison director. Also loved the minor subplot about Tangent getting killed in that shooting accident.

Have not read Brideshead yet, though I do have a copy now. So far I'd rate the books I've read:

Vile Bodies > Scoop > D&F > Black Mischief

Interesting that BR is now considered his most notable work. I found an Atlantic article from the 70s which operates on the assumption that A Handful of Dust is widely considered his greatest work, which certainly doesn't seem to be the assumption now. I'm reading it next, so we'll get to have a look at least.

yeah, i know a lot of critics aren't as fond of Brideshead either since it isn't a satire like his others and is too serious.

I like it though because i like nostalgia heavy books, the writing is really good, and it's about Catholics.

I liked A Handful of Dust but IIRC it is a little heavy on the cynicism, even relative to other satires.
